Thank you, Next - Real Estate Commercial Development

4/03/2019

Seat moves are exciting and busy times. Here's a little insight and a helping hand should you rotate into Commercial Development.

What tasks have you particularly enjoyed in this seat?

Commercial Development is a fast-paced environment. When I was doing my Accelerated LPC I focused on commercial modules and it has been great to be involved in the department's deals. Some of my favourite tasks have included drafting an agreement for proceeds of sale, as well as preparing a presentation to an Israeli investment delegation presented by two senior members of the team. The presentation went well and it was great receiving positive feedback for my work from the Partner. I have also really enjoyed the quirkier tasks, like researching the law on private vaults beneath public roads!

What have you learned in this seat that will help in your career?

I feel like this seat has been a great foundation for the rest of my training contract. Obviously in the first few weeks of a new career there is a huge amount of information to take it. This seat has helped me learn about the practical ways to become a better junior lawyer: the best methods of research, how to locate useful precedent documents and how to tailor my communication to different clients. As a busy seat it's also helped me prioritise tasks, spot potential problems, but also to remember to make time for social fun with your colleagues!

What are your top tips for other trainees to hit the ground running in this seat?

My colleague Adam was the previous trainee in this seat. I was very fortunate that he took the time to have a chat and also give me some great tips, like sharing a tracker spreadsheet. I think logging tasks and keeping a tracker really helps, especially in the early days of a seat & it's also helpful for a supervisor to see. It's key to  remember the following: that priorities can change throughout the day with the ebb and flow of business, to work hard, to be positive and to always remember that colleagues want you to do well!
