Charlotte Towerton's First Impressions

Why did you decide to pursue a career in law?

I am interested in how the law evolves, its application, and ultimately its effect on commercial considerations. I enjoy problem solving and providing solutions to complex factual and legal matters. I also wanted to assist others with their goals, be it personal or business.

What career path did you take to get to where you are?

I originally worked in PR and Public Affairs for R3, the trade body for Insolvency Practitioners. I was interested in the work undertaken by lawyers in this practice area. I then studied the GDL and was later a paralegal at DMH Stallard in Dispute Resolution and Corporate.

First impression of the firm and its values?

The firm is a very friendly place to work - everyone is approachable from the top down, including Partners, Team Assistants, the IT and BD teams. After my first few days, I felt like I could ask questions, and no question was too silly! The firm encourages you to be yourself.

First impression of the firm's culture?

It is open to new ideas, flexible and dynamic. It is also non- hierarchical which I think is helped by the open plan offices. It's a diverse firm and I would say there is no typical Howard Kennedy employee.

 First impression of your seat?

The Construction team is very busy and doing a wide-range of work, which is great to cut one's teeth into. It is combination of contentious and non-contentious work which offers an opportunity to develop a good variety of skills.

First impression your supervision and the mentor scheme?

My supervisor is patient and very clear when giving instructions. It is also helpful to have a mentor outside of your team who you can discuss career matters with. We met up soon after I joined the firm and discussed any queries I had, which is all completely off the record.

First impression of the social side of the firm?

There's a lot going on socially within the firm. We've had Bingo, staff drinks, and the magnum of champagne raffle!

First impression of the local area?

Being right by Borough Market is a treat! I still have lots of places to see and eat. We went for a team lunch at Elliott's cafe the other day, which was sensational. Our trainee intake also have a special hankering for the George pub and it is in fact is our WhatsApp group name!
